    Music Intervals Explained — Degree, Quality, and How to Read Them

    Sit at the piano and play C with E. Shift one finger and play C with G. Both chords sit with C on the bottom, both span about the same visible gap on the page, and yet the two sound completely unlike each other. One opens bright and forward; the other settles into a heavier kind of stability. The thing that creates that difference is the interval — the distance between two pitches.

    This guide is about how musicians measure that distance, and about why two notes the same number of staff positions apart can still be very different intervals. The trick is to read intervals along two axes at once: degree and quality.

    Degree — Counting Positions on the Staff

    The first axis is degree. It counts how many staff positions two notes are apart, always starting the count from the lower note as 1.

    • C and C (same pitch) = a unison (1st)
    • C and D = a 2nd
    • C and E = a 3rd
    • C and F = a 4th
    • C and G = a 5th
    • C and A = a 6th
    • C and B = a 7th
    • C and the next C up = an 8th (octave)

    There's one common trap. Degree does not count the gaps between notes — it counts the staff positions themselves, including both endpoints. From C up to E, the line of letter names passes through C, D, and E, three positions, so the interval is a 3rd. Two steps apart does not make it a 2nd. Lines and spaces both count, and the bottom note counts as 1.

    Quality — Five Flavors Within Each Degree

    Degree alone doesn't pin down an interval. C–E and C–E♭ are both 3rds, but they're audibly different distances and create different chord colors. The second axis — quality — captures that difference.

    Quality is decided by counting semitones, the smallest standard step in Western music (the distance from one piano key to the very next one, black or white). There are five qualities an interval can take:

    • Perfect (P)
    • Major (M)
    • minor (m)
    • Augmented (A)
    • diminished (d)

    Not every degree uses all five. Some degrees take perfect-style qualities, others take major-and-minor-style qualities, and both groups can be modified upward or downward into augmented and diminished.

    Perfect — Used by the 1st, 4th, 5th, and Octave

    The 1st, 4th, 5th, and 8th can only be perfect, augmented, or diminished. There's no such thing as a "major 5th" or "minor 4th." These four degrees form the harmonic backbone of Western tonality — the most stable, most consonant intervals — and they correspond acoustically to simple whole-number ratios in the overtone series. That stability is what earned them the label perfect.

    • Perfect unison = 0 semitones (the same pitch)
    • Perfect 4th = 5 semitones (C–F)
    • Perfect 5th = 7 semitones (C–G)
    • Perfect octave = 12 semitones (C up to the next C)

    Major and Minor — Used by the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 7th

    The 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 7th take major or minor qualities (and can also be augmented or diminished). The distance from C up to the natural form of D, E, A, or B counts as the major version of that degree; shrink it by one semitone and you get the minor version.

    • Major 2nd = 2 semitones (C–D); minor 2nd = 1 semitone (E–F)
    • Major 3rd = 4 semitones (C–E); minor 3rd = 3 semitones (C–E♭)
    • Major 6th = 9 semitones (C–A); minor 6th = 8 semitones (C–A♭)
    • Major 7th = 11 semitones (C–B); minor 7th = 10 semitones (C–B♭)

    The major/minor split is the single most important quality distinction in tonal music. A chord with a major 3rd on top sounds bright; a chord with a minor 3rd on top sounds dark. Almost all of the harmonic character of a triad lives in that one interval.

    Augmented and diminished — A Semitone Off

    Push a perfect or major interval up by one semitone and it becomes augmented. Shrink a perfect or minor interval down by one semitone and it becomes diminished. The same total semitone distance can show up under more than one name, depending on how the notes are spelled. C–F♯ is an augmented 4th (six semitones across four staff positions); C–G♭ is a diminished 5th (also six semitones, but across five positions). Same sound, different intervals — because the spelling decides the degree, and the degree decides the name.

    Reading Intervals in Practice

    Once the two axes click, naming an interval comes down to two quick checks. First count staff positions to fix the degree. Then count semitones to lock in the quality.

    • C up to G: five letter names (C, D, E, F, G) → a 5th; seven semitones → perfect 5th.
    • C up to E: three letter names → a 3rd; four semitones → major 3rd.
    • C up to E♭: still three letter names (C, D, E with a flat) → still a 3rd; three semitones → minor 3rd.
    • C up to F♯: four letter names → a 4th; six semitones → augmented 4th.
    • E up to C: six letter names → a 6th; eight semitones → minor 6th.

    Done enough times, the count fades into the background. Reading two notes on the staff starts to trigger the degree automatically, and the accidentals (sharps, flats, naturals) handle the quality. Intervals stop being a table to memorize and become a coordinate system you can read at a glance.

    Back to C–E and C–G

    The two chords from the start were a major 3rd (C–E: three staff positions, four semitones) and a perfect 5th (C–G: five staff positions, seven semitones). The visible gap on the page barely changes, but one is the bright color of a major triad and the other is the open stability of a fifth — and those two axes, degree and quality, are exactly what separates them.

    Reading intervals well changes how a score looks. Music starts to feel less like a string of individual notes and more like a network of distances. Next time a new piece is open on the stand, measure a few intervals before playing. The same notes will sound different.
