Open a Liszt étude or a Debussy prelude and the treble staff will often be topped with the abbreviation 8va, followed by a dashed line that stretches across a passage before ending in a small vertical tick. The meaning is clear enough: play those notes an octave higher than written. Less obvious is 8vb, which shows up below the bass staff. Less common still are 15ma and 15mb, which require a moment's calculation if you haven't memorized them. And it isn't always obvious whether the final note under the bracket is included or excluded.
All four symbols address the same problem: piano and keyboard music spans a range too wide to notate clearly without them.
Why Octave Signs Exist
A modern 88-key piano runs from A0 to C8 — just over seven octaves. Notating the upper end of that range in standard notation means stacking ledger lines above the treble staff: four, six, eight lines for passages in the highest registers. The same problem applies in the bass.
Octave signs compress this. A passage is written lower than its intended pitch — in a range that sits comfortably within or near the staff — while the sign above or below indicates the actual octave. The visual complexity drops dramatically.
Lehmann and Ericsson (1996), in their study of expert sight-reading, documented that skilled pianists process scores with significantly fewer and shorter eye movements than less-experienced players. Dense stacks of ledger lines slow that scanning down. Octave signs preserve reading fluency by keeping notation within a legible band of the staff.
The Cristofori piano in the cover image dates from 1720, when keyboard range was still limited by today's standards. As instruments expanded through the 18th and 19th centuries, octave signs became increasingly necessary — particularly once Liszt and his contemporaries began pushing the piano to its physical limits.
8va and 8vb — One Octave in Each Direction
8va (ottava alta — "high octave") is the most common octave sign. It tells the performer to play the bracketed notes one octave higher than written.
- Symbol: 8va, or simply 8 above the staff
- Placement: above the affected part
- Duration: from the symbol through the dashed line to the closing vertical tick (inclusive of the final note under the tick)
- Release: automatic at the bracket's end; loco ("in place") may mark an explicit return to written pitch
8vb (ottava bassa — "low octave") works the same way in the opposite direction: play the bracketed notes one octave lower than written.
- Symbol: 8vb, 8va bassa, or 8 below the staff
- Placement: below the affected part
- Duration: same bracket convention as 8va
The closing vertical tick at the end of the dashed line is the decisive detail. The note beneath that tick is included in the transposition. A bracket without the tick (or with a curved end) is an older notational style that functions the same way.

15ma and 15mb — Two Octaves
15ma (quindicesima alta — "fifteenth above") shifts notes two octaves higher. The number 15 counts the interval steps from a note to the note two octaves above it — the same logic that makes an octave an "8th" (eight diatonic steps inclusive).
15mb (quindicesima bassa) shifts notes two octaves lower.

15ma and 15mb appear more often in organ music, where very low or very high registers are built into the instrument's physical design. In piano music, 15ma shows up in late Romantic and 20th-century works — Liszt's Transcendental Études, Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit — wherever the composer needs the highest register of the keyboard but wants to keep the notation readable.
Reading Octave Signs in Practice
When an octave sign appears in a score:
- Identify the symbol: 8 = one octave; 15 = two octaves. Alta/above the staff = higher; bassa/below the staff = lower.
- Find the bracket: the transposition applies from the first note under the symbol to the note at the closing tick.
- Check for loco: if loco appears after the bracket, the next note returns to written pitch. Without it, the release is implied by the bracket's end.
- Watch for stacked brackets: a passage can be marked 8va in the right hand while 8vb applies to the left simultaneously — each applies only to its own staff.
The bracket convention — dashed line, closing tick — is consistent across all four symbols. Once that pattern is recognized, distinguishing 8va from 15ma is simply a matter of reading the number.
Consistent note recognition is the underlying skill that makes this easy. The faster a player identifies individual note names, the more cognitive bandwidth is available to process signs like these alongside the notes themselves. Sight-reading fluency means not just reading notes but absorbing the full layer of notational instructions — octave signs, dynamics, articulation — as a single integrated pass.
